Lanzarote’s 10 best beaches

However, one thing we do all have in common is that in summer we’re all on the lookout for the best beaches in Lanzarote. The only difference is – do we want white sand, to be with the kids, no wind, to go snorkelling or do water sports, etc, etc.? We presents you the 10 best coastal areas, no matter what you’re searching for.

Lanzarote’s best beaches for enjoying with the kids

Fancy a day on the beach with the family? Below we recommend the best beaches on Lanzarote to enjoy with children, with the best atmosphere and all the services you may need.

Arrieta

Arrieta, also called ‘La Garita’, is one of the loveliest beaches in the north of Lanzarote. Stretching for almost one kilometre, it’s one of the best beaches to go to with children as they can safely enjoy its waters. There are toilets and changing rooms nearby, making everything so much easier for a day out on the beach with the entire family. There’s also a beach bar, where you can enjoy a drink or have a bite to eat.

Playa Grande

If we’re listing the best beaches to go to with children, then it goes without saying that Playa Grande is firmly amongst them. Located in the resort town of Puerto del Carmen, it stretches for more than one kilometre, creating an amazing setting with its golden sand and turquoise waters. It’s the perfect beach for families, as it has showers, parking, lifeguards and a sunbed and parasol hire service. And in addition, after a day on the beach, you can stroll along the wide promenade, which has plenty of shops and restaurants to keep you busy.

The best beaches to shelter from the wind in Lanzarote

The trade winds constantly pound Lanzarote, but it is during the summer months, especially July, when they blow with greater strength. If you don’t want these to ruin your day on the beach, check out the best beaches without wind on the island.

Playa El Ancla

Playa El Ancla, also known as Playa El Rey, is another of the coastal zones that are well worth a visit in Lanzarote. It is located at the entrance of Costa Teguise – when coming from Arrecife – and is one of Lanzarote’s best wind-free beaches. Although the trade winds are a typical feature in this zone, the rocks that protect it permit residents and visitors to enjoy a tranquil swim in its turquoise waters and to sunbathe on the sand.

La Peñita

This cove, located in Puerto del Carmen, is also a great choice for avoiding the trade winds during a day on the beach. It is an oasis of tranquillity just off the promenade, which is still relatively unknown. Its rocky geography means you can enjoy the sun whilst lying on its golden sand and dipping into its transparent waters, with only a hint of a sea breeze.

Playa Quemada

Another of the best beaches in Lanzarote that offers shelter from the wind is in the peaceful fishing village of Playa Quemada: La Arena The beach can be accessed by a path from the village if the tide is low, or by climbing up a small mountain at high tide which gives you incredible vistas over a stunning landscape. Its dark blue waters gently lap onto the black sand. Without question, this is one of the best beach zones when you’re after tranquillity and shelter from the trade winds, thanks to the small mountains that surround it.

The best beach in Lanzarote for fans of snorkelling

Lanzarote’s marine fauna is a treasure that many are longing to catch a glimpse of. This is why the island has various zones earmarked for snorkelling and scuba diving. If you want to know where they are, grab your wet suit and take note.

Barranco del Quíquere

For snorkelling, we recommend the rocky cove Barranco del Quíquere. It’s a few kilometres from Puerto del Carmen and has the advantage of being in this very calm sea zone which is sheltered from the wind, making scuba diving and other water sports less complicated. Access to the water in this cove is via a rocky zone, so we recommend you wear water shoes.

Playa Chica

If you love diving, then Lanzarote’s Playa Chica is the place to be. Located in Puerto del Carmen, there are several diving schools along this beach with crystal-clear, calm waters, that invite you to take the plunge and discover the immense diversity of marine species the island is home to. Even less-experienced divers can enjoy its underwater landscape full of reefs and rocky formations.

The best beaches to enjoy crystal-clear waters in Lanzarote

Even though it’s a well-known fact that Lanzarote has crystalline, turquoise waters wherever you go, there are some zones that are veritable gems for those who enjoy looking at the seabed whilst taking a dip. If you’re one of them, here are our recommendations.

Playa de Papagayo

Playa de Papagayo, one of the best beaches in Lanzarote, is inside the Los Ajaches Nature Reserve. It’s an idyllic beach that’s set in the midst of nature yet a mere 5 minutes away from the coastal village of Playa Blanca. It’s absolutely perfect if you’re looking for a cove that’s sheltered from the wind, as the low rock formations it’s nestled in let you enjoy more of the sun. Fantastic views of Lobos Island and the silhouette of Fuerteventura can also be seen from it.

Los Charcones

Another beach zone in Lanzarote – well, more of a bathing zone – that simply must be visited is Los Charcones. These naturally-formed pools which are perfect for swimming in are located in a rocky valley and filled with waters from the Atlantic Ocean. They are enjoyed by residents and visitors alike and are great if you’re not keen on sandy beaches. The Pechigera Lighthouse, in the southwest of the island, is only two kilometres away.

Relax on the most peaceful beaches in Lanzarote

Peace reigns in Lanzarote and, naturally, some of its beaches make it easy for you to totally disconnect. If you want to get away from all the hustle, bustle and noise, these are the coastal areas on the island to visit.

Playa de Las Malvas

Located in the municipality of Tinajo, Playa de Las Malvas is one of the best beaches on the island for enjoying its original volcanic nature. To reach it, you’ll have to walk along a dirt track from the town of Tinajo. At the end, you’ll come across a small cove of black sand stretching around 300 metres, where peace and quiet is guaranteed.

Charco del Palo

If you’re looking for a nudist beach as well as tranquillity in Lanzarote, then Charco del Palo is for you. This is a naturist tourist resort situated in the northeast of the island, directly on the coast of the village of Mala. Here you can enjoy its coves and tidal pools without wearing clothes, enjoying all the benefits of the sun’s rays and salty sea water on your skin. However, if you want to eat in some of its restaurants, you’ll need to put clothes on as being dressed is compulsory.

And the best beach in Lanzarote is...

Finally, taking into account its waters, its setting and its atmosphere, the answer to this is pretty clear to us. We reckon the best beach in Lanzarote is…

Famara

Six kilometres of coastline beneath an imposing crag create a breathtaking scene that everyone simply falls in love with. The trade winds that blow on Famara beach make it the perfect spot for all lovers of surfing, kitesurfing and other water adventure sports, and also invigorate anyone who decides to go for a walk along the beach, soak up some sun or take a dip.

If you like this beach, then we also recommend Playa del Risco. It boasts 500 metres of coastline beneath the Risco de Famara cliffs, where tranquillity reigns supreme. There are two ways to get there: hiking down the Camino de Los Gracioseros, which takes about 40 minutes, or by boat. Whether you’re on Playa del Risco or Famara, you can enjoy the views of the Chinijo Archipelago right in front of you.
