Museum of Piracy: Where is it?

The Museum of Piracy in Teguise, is located in the Castle of Santa Bárbara, a place that served as a shield against the different pirate attacks suffered by Lanzarote from the 16th century on. It is a key place for fighting off buccaneers because the entire island can be seen from the top of the building and in any direction:

● Archipelago Chinijo, to the north.

● The spectacular jable valley of Famara-Tiagua, towards the west.

● Arrecife and the east coast of Lanzarote.

Lanzarote was one of the islands most threatened by international pirates So, the Museum addresses two historical perspectives: the study of piracy in Teguise and the study of international piracy in the Canaries. It is worth mentioning that the message conveyed in the visit is that the Canary Islands were an area conducive to international piracy from the discovery of America on.

The cultural space is characterised by the use of animation. The visit looks at the lives of universal privateers and, of course, the history of the pirate attacks on Lanzarote is displayed.

The tour is very interesting, as it is possible to observe what the inhabitants of the Canary Islands suffered and how they managed to overcome the marine threat.

Pirates and their tools, weapons, have a place in the exhibition, as do vessels and maps from the period. The ships, mythologized in film, with offensive flags declaring raids and fierce battles.

What can you see in the Museum of Piracy:

The Museum of Piracy is formed by seven different rooms that look at and provide information on the main role of the castle. An educational journey through reproductions, illustrations, maps, models, weapons, ships and galleons. As an appetiser to what you will be able to see first-hand, we are showing you a little about the first two rooms of the Museum:

The first room displays the history of Teguise as the former capital of the island and presents a model of the old town, which details the political, military and religious power of Villa de Teguise. The second room deals with the most significant raids suffered in Lanzarote between 1551 and 1618, carried out by Barbary pirates such as Morato Arráez, Tabac Arráez and Soliman. The visit becomes increasingly interesting as we delve into the “Trades in Teguise” room.

The Museum of Piracy uses the different fortresses of Lanzarote as references, for example the Norman conquest and the raid by Morato Arráez on Callejón de la Sangre in Villa de Teguise.

The narrow corridors of the Castle display figures of internationally renowned pirates, such as John Hawkins, Francis Drake and Robert Blake, among others.
